Mgarr is the first Gozitan village most visitors see as the Gozo Channel ferry docks in Mgarr Harbour. Several decoratively painted small fishing vessels also berth in this harbour. A Knight of Saint John called de Chambray had fortifications built here and had plans to create a walled town much like Valetta. These plans were never carried out, but there are now some modern residential buildings being built within the confines of the fort. Since nearly all tourists pass through Mgarr, there are many businesses catering to them. The view of of the islands of Comino and Malta are quite spectacular from some vantage points in Mgarr.
