Population: 6030 Centrally located, all bus routes terminate at Victoria. Victoria is still called Rabat by many Gozitans despite being named in honor of the Queen of England in 1897. Rabat is a word describing an urban area outside of the walls of a fortification. Victoria is the urban center of the island of Gozo The most prominent feature of Rabat is the Citadel. The main traffic artery is Triq ir-Republikk which is, for the most part very straight and wide by Gozo standards. There is an open air market in Independance Square at the top of Republic Street from which there extends a varitable labyrinth of cobblestone alleyways containing various small shops. Most of the island's major retail is located on or near Republic Street. Victoria has more than one opera house, and there are occasionally productions that draw a sufficient crowd from the larger island of Malta to warrant a change in the ferry schedule.
