Walking

Given the small size of Gozo, walking is a very viable alternative form of transportation. Victoria, the main center for government, retail and entertainment, is centrally located and within three miles of most of Gozo's villages. This article contains some pointers for comfortable walking in Gozo.

Walking also allows you to experience the landscape in a more immediate way than you can when driving. Many of the small businesses and points of interest are situated in narrow cobblestone alleyways where walking is very much preferable to driving. If you overestimate your endurance, home is usually just a 20 cent bus ride away.

Gozo's landscape is mostly comprised of limestone plateaus surrounded by steep fertile valleys. Many of the villages have been built on these plateaus so there aren't many steep hills to walk within the villages themselves. Shortcuts between neighborong villages are a different story. Main roads, typically the bus routes, generally have long switchbacks to lessen the grade of the hill.

Mid summer has the only weather condition worthy of a caution. Temperatures climb high enough to present a risk for heat exhaustion and dehydration, so walk very early in the morning or late in the afternoon and bring a hat and a water bottle.

There are no 'rough neighborhoods' to worry about. Crime rates are very low in the Republic of Malta and in Gozo in particular. Locals are almost always happy to assist a lost foreigner. Once when we were not actually even lost we were offered directions to what is now our treasured shortcut to the beach.
